Minimizing the Appearance of Keratosis Pilaris

Do you have little bumps on the relative back of your arms or on your legs? If you have small (1-2 mm) bumps that look like goosebumps or small patches of dark pores and skin, you might have Keratosis KP or Pilaris. This is a genetic skin condition-and is fairly common actually. So common actually, that dermatologists have recognized it as a type of normal skin-50 to 80% of teenagers, and 40% of adults experience it at some point in their life. Also Read: Natural Face Care Products

Keratosis Pilaris (KP) is caused by built-up keratin (a protein that protects your skin layer) in your own hair follicles. When the keratin accumulates, it blocks the opening of the hair follicle, which results in the bumps you see. You may experience more bumps during certain times when the weather is dry in the winter months especially. KP is harmless, and the bumps do not cause any pain nor do they itch.

You cannot cure KP necessarily; however, you can minimize the bumps and improve the appearance of the skin. The method to do this is to exfoliate and moisturize using a gentle exfoliant and an exfoliating mitt to remove the dead pores and skin cells from the surface. However, make sure you usually do not scrub hard, as you can irritate the skin and make your KP worse actually! Also Read: Anti Aging Skincare Set
